How to unblock your InSinkErator safely and effectively

How to unblock your InSinkErator safely and effectively, as depicted in the drawing, follow these five essential steps:

Ensure Power is Disconnected

Safety is the most critical first step whenever you are working on a garbage disposal. Before attempting any repairs, ensure the power is completely disconnected by either unplugging the unit from the outlet under the sink or turning off the dedicated circuit breaker in your home's service panel. Never rely solely on the wall switch, as accidentally flipping it during the process could lead to serious injury.

Manually Rotate the Impellers

As shown in the illustration, most InSinkErator models feature a small, hexagonal hole at the bottom center of the unit. Insert the "wrenchette" (the silver hex key that came with the unit) or a standard 1/4-inch Allen wrench into this hole. Firmly work the wrench back and forth in both directions to manually rotate the motor and break up whatever is jamming the internal grinding plates. Continue this until the wrench can turn easily in a full 360-degree circle.

Remove Visible Obstructions

Once you have freed the jam from the bottom, use a bright flashlight to peer down through the sink drain and inspect the grinding chamber. Look for common culprits like small bones, fruit pits, or metal items such as silverware or bottle caps. Use pliers or long tongs to carefully extract any visible debris; never place your hand inside the disposal, even with the power off.

Reset the Internal Breaker

When a disposal jams, it often triggers an internal safety breaker to protect the motor from burning out. After clearing the blockage, locate the red reset button on the very bottom of the unit. If the button has "popped" out (about a quarter-inch), wait a few minutes for the motor to cool down and then press it back in firmly. If it doesn't stay up, wait another ten minutes before trying again.

Flush and Test the Unit

After resetting, restore the power and turn on a steady stream of cool water into the sink. Switch the disposal on to verify it runs smoothly. To clear any remaining fine particles or grease, you can pour a mixture of baking soda and vinegar down the drain, let it fizz for a few minutes, and then flush it with hot water. This final step ensures the drain line is clear and helps deodorize the unit.
